Where is AirAsia Flight QZ8501 now? Flight QZ8501 left Surabaya in eastern Java at 05:35 local time (22:35GMT) and was due to arrive in Singapore at 08:30 (00:30) GMT). The Airbus A320-200 with 162 people on board lost contact with air traffic control at 06:24 local time (23:24 GMT). No distress call was made.
"Initial allegations is like that (drowned), although we will still report any new findings," said Air Chief Marshal Bambang Soelistyo in Jakarta on Monday (29/12). The National Search and Rescue Team (Basarnas) focused their search of AirAsia flight QZ8501 that lost. Basarnas estimated it to drown at the bottom of the sea around the Pacific Islands and West Kalimantan.
According to Bambang, the estimation was based on the last coordinates tracked by Air Traffic Controller (ATC) Soekarno-Hatta International Airport above Karimata Strait region. Basarnas also admitted that the biggest obstacle of determining the exact location of the lost aircraft were the limitations of technology equipment.
"The technology equipment Basarnas has
is limited and not optimal related to accuracy and speed, especially when
operating in the depths of the sea," said Bambang. Therefore, Bambang was
greatly helped by the ship belonging to the Agency for the Assessment and
Application of Technology (BPPT), which has a sonar system.
